April 24, 2004: SIUE Physics Contest

For those who are interested here is the report on the Physics Contest held this April at SIUE.

We had four schools represented with 34 students in attendance. Given proms, soccer games and the perceived distance to SIUE, we were pleased with the turnout (not that more wouldn't be nice).

The test had 50 questions and two tie-breaker questions. The average score on the test was 19.6 and the high score was a 34. There were two honorable mention certificates given out for scores above 28. This year marked the introduction of the Isaac Newton Awards for those students who performed admirably on the mechanics questions and who were not otherwise recognized. Seven students were awarded this prize. After the test, many students toured SIUE's laser lab.

The individual winners were:
FIRST PRIZE - Jonathan Cannon, Clayton High School
SECOND PRIZE - Max Romano, Clayton High School
THIRD PRIZE - Kenji Ishida, Clayton High School
FOURTH PRIZE - Alex Cloninger, Parkway South High School
FOURTH PRIZE - Edward Dong, Clayton High School

The school winner (as determined by the four highest individual scores) was Clayton High School.

Congratulations to all the participants and their teachers.

For those who would like a copy of the test and key, send me an email with your address and I'll get it out in my usual prompt fashion ;)

Bring your students to participate in the physics contest. Prizes will be awarded to the top scoring students.

While the students are taking the test, we will run a physics/chemistry sharing session. Also, tours of the Engineering Building and the Optics labs will be offered.

To register for the contest, send an e-mail to Tom Foster, tfoster@siue.edu. All he needs is the name of the students, but he would like the teacher's full contact information: addresses, phone numbers, and email.
