September 30, 2006: Newton's 1st Law and Hovercraft Make'n Take Workshop
Location: Kirkwood High School - Room NW-133 - (map link below)
Time: 8:00 (refreshments) 8:30 - 11:00 (workshop)
Fee: $30.00 (if you want to build a student hover craft)

Join SLAPT members old and new as we explore a variety of methods for teaching Newton's First Law. We'll begin with an overview of demonstrations, student activities and games - many of which require easily attainable materials. From there we'll move on to construction of a CD/balloon hovercraft that your students can build to further investigate force and motion.

Then we'll make full sized hovercrafts that can be ridden by students. This is a relatively simple project. I'll have all the materials prepared in advance - all that will be required is cutting some plastic, attaching one bolt, and a lot duct taping. With some teamwork we should have them completed in about 45 minutes. We'll test them at the workshop, but to use these back at your school you'll need an air source, shop vac, or leaf blower. If you don't have one let me know - I have a few old vacuum cleaners that we can modify.

I plan to gather materials the weekend before the meeting, so please let me know if you are planning to attend by Friday. 9/22. If want to build a student hover craft send a check (made out to Joe Bartin) for $30.00 to the address below by 9/22. If you have any questions don't hesitate to contact me by email, bartinj@gw.kirkwood.k12.mo.us, or by phone at 213-6100 x 1251.

Also (just in case all the physics wasn't reason enough to attend) there will be refreshments and attendance prizes.
