January 21, 2006: TIPERS - Tasks Inspired by Physics Education Research

Hello to all the SLAPteachers,
On Jan 21, 2006 there will be a meeting at Parkway Central High School on the topic of TIPERS, Tasks Inspired by Physics Education Research. Ranking Tasks are a subset of the TIPERS. These activities help answer the question how do we as teachers know what our students know. As the years pass I am more and more aware of the methods students apply to "understand" material in their busy lives. It is so minimalistic in the sense that many students do not have the time to develop that deep comprehension that will carry through for years. So it becomes important to put students in an environment that challenges their thinking skills as well as their complacency. These activities are a challenge to me to develop and grade. TIPERS have formed a core to the questions I ask kids and they tell subtle things about kids knowledge as well as my teaching. Come join me as we explore the TIPERS and their use.
