Future Physicists Day April 14, 2008
The American Physical Society is hosting Future Physicists Day on April 14, 2008 in St. Louis. This event will be a part of April meeting of the APS, which will begin on April 12, 2008 and continue through April 15, 2008. The event begins at 8:30 am and formally concludes at 2:30 pm. Details about the event can be found at the event website (http://www.aps.org/meetings/april/others/events/futurephysicists.cfm), but I'll share a short summary here.
On Monday, we have invited a physicists from a variety of fields (medical physics, gravitational physics, industrial physical chemistry, optics and wind energy) and employment sectors (academics to industry) to speak with high school and undergraduate students. These speakers will give the students an introduction to the work they
are doing in their jobs (see the "Presentations Highlight what Physicists Do" section of the event website). During lunch, we will provide more information about what physicists do for a living and we'll have time for all of our experts to answer questions from the students.
Of course, one of the most exciting aspects of Physics is DOING physics. So we are also planning to have several hands-on activities that will help students learn a bit about the science that they will be hearing about in the presentations.
Information about all of these events can be found at the Future Physicists Day website mentioned above. We'll update the site with more details about the events as the day approaches.
In addition, teachers that register their students for this event will also receive free registration for the entire APS meeting and will be able to attend any presentations throughout the weekend. Because this is a general meeting of the APS, there are many presentations throughout the weekend that are accessible to audiences that are not experts in the a specific area of physics! You can check out the full schedule of events at http://meetings.aps.org/Meeting/APR08/
There is no cost for Future Physicists Day. In fact, limited travel funds are available and lunch will be provided for all registered participants. However, there is limited space. Teachers will need to complete a registration form for the event, which can be downloaded from http://www.aps.org/meetings/april/others/events/upload/regform08.doc
If you have any questions about the either Future Physicists Day or the travel funds, please contact Cathy Mader at mader@aps.org.
The 120th Annual Meeting of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific May 31-June 4
In 2008, the annual meeting of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific will be held from May 31-June 4 in St. Louis, Mo. Education and outreach professionals will gather to discuss international, regional and local programs for the International Year of Astronomy in 2009. This special event celebrates the 400th anniversary of the astronomical telescope.
If you are interested in planning activities in 2009, this meeting provides an opportunity to learn what institutions and organizations are proposing, and to coordinate ideas with colleagues around the country and the world. Workshops will demonstrate and develop techniques for reaching a wide range of audiences.
For more information about the conference, visit http://www.astrosociety.org/events/meeting.html. Questions about the conference may be sent to 2008meeting@astrosociety.org.
2008 STARS Program Application Window: February 29 to March 28, 2008
The 2008 STARS Program offers academically-talented students who are entering their junior or senior year of high school and their teachers a rare opportunity to work within a laboratory research setting with top scientists at the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center, Saint Louis University, Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville, Washington University, and the host institution, the University of Missouri-St. Louis.
For six weeks (June 9-July 18, 2008), participants join a community of investigators working under the supervision of practicing research scientists. More than 62 scientists who work in fields such as biology, chemistry, computer science, earth science, engineering, environmental science, medicine, and psychology will share their experiences as they and their research team direct students and teachers in research projects.
Activities include a research paper (presented at the end of the program), lectures by nationally-known scientists, field trips, career confabs, communications, and social activities.
Most of the STARS participants are rising seniors, although we do consider very outstanding rising junior level students.
If you would like to know more about the program, please feel free to access our website at www.umsl.edu/~sep/stars.htm.
Tuition for the 2008 Pfizer-Solutia Program will be $1450.00 for in-state students and $1650.00 for out-of-state students and all students must pay a $50.00 STARS application fee.
There is a limited amount of financial aid and students must present a compelling reason to be considered for assistance.
